Dr. Cereda highlights the priority challenges faced by both healthcare organizations and HCPs in clinical practice today and tomorrow. Cancer is one of the highest priority healthcare burdens with high prevalence of malnutrition and muscle loss impacting oncology outcome as well as recovery. These can lead to incomplete recovery, especially in polymorbid ageing population, thereby accelerating functional decline, and driving recurrent falls risk in later years, leading to fracture, hospitalization, dependency, pool QoL and ultimately a state of frailty.
Reflecting on how muscle loss during healthcare setbacks can Impact recovery and aging trajectories, Dr. Cereda poses the concept of clinical nutrition as a ‘game changer’ in cancer and frailty care, especially when administered assertively, and with the right evidence-based approach.
Preserving muscle mass from the onset of the cancer journey is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes. Professor Prado underscores the importance of early identification and management of nutritional challenges and inadequate intake through proactive nutritional interventions. Her latest research emphasizes the significance of meeting elevated protein needs during cancer treatment, demonstrating that high-protein interventions play a key role in maintaining muscle mass Additionally, she discusses the evolving needs of oncology patients, including novel data on taste alterations, inflammation and inadequate oral intake, which are comm in in this population. Professor Prado highlights the importance of patient-centric care in enhancing the success of high-protein nutritional strategies.

The session focuses on the important role of prehabilitation in enhancing patient outcomes throughout the cancer treatment journey. Dr. Rebecca Stratton opens the discussion by addressing the rising incidence of cancer and the prolonged patient journey, which can severely deplete nutritional and functional reserves. She introduces prehabilitation, its goals, key principles, and the important role of nutritional support, highlighting recent evidence on its benefits for oncology treatment and patient outcomes.
The session focuses on the important role of prehabilitation in enhancing patient outcomes throughout the cancer treatment journey. Dr. Rachael Barlow delves into the practical implementation of a prehabilitation program. She shares valuable insights and key learnings from her experience of developing and implementing regional and national prehabilitation and optimization programs in oncology.
Dr. Petra Beran Holečková shares new data on the benefits of high-protein Omega-3 enriched oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in cancer care. Her presentation presents insights on a multi-center study involving adult outpatients receiving anti-cancer treatment who were either malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. Participants received 2 servings of Forticare Advanced, a high-protein, Omega-3 enriched ONS, for three months. Dr. Beran Holečková highlights key outcomes, including body weight and compliance, while also evaluating secondary measures such as C-reactive protein, hand grip strength, physical performance, and patient-reported outcomes throughout the intervention.
